I grew up in Tijuana, Mexico and the way most people collected music was through piracy. The only good music shops were available to those who could cross the border to San Diego.
As reprehensible as it may be, burning CDs was the way we "curated" our playlists. The kids would select specific songs from different albums across multiple musical genres, creating a unique blend of sounds that we all believed represented a piece of us. Playing your disc to yours friends felt almost like getting naked in front of them.
In my case, I had a lot of film soundtracks. I noticed very early on that my mind would ignore lyrics (something I still struggle today). I would play them to my mother and ask her what film and scene this piece of music belonged to. Those were fun times.
Thank you for the shout out! I’m happy to be the resident Hollyweird expert 😂
Luckily I don’t have to hear the answer to the question “What does music playlist say about you?” My newest playlist is a mixture of metal bands (I’m originally from Finland so what else could it be) such as Metallica and Slipknot, mixed with Billie Eilish, Mozart and Eminem. To come to think of it, I might have some sort of musical disorder.
Very good questions. I think physical collections have become more important than they used to be, due to what I call wider "empirical bandwidth." For example, Spotify playlists are a collection, sure, but Vinyl provides smell, touch, and sight experiences that screens do not. And interacting with physical reality is good for us.
As for me, I started with tapes and CDs, but now my big thing is physical books. They damper the echo in my room, make it smell nicer and most importantly, they make the most profound life lessons I've received just a couple steps away. I can return to them whenever I feel the need.
Growing up, I collected just about every playing card there was.
Pokemon, YuGiOh, MtG, even Zach Bell.
I loved to sort them, like your brother, but funnily enough, nobody wanted to play the actual games with me until high school 😆
Now there's so much to curate! I love making playlists, and sending them as gifts to my friends. And I love gardening, which is a continual process of curation.
I think it's crucial for our wellbeing to curate our social media feeds. For a while, I was slowly becoming a very angry person just because I was subjecting myself to feeds that were raising awareness about everything going wrong with the world.
Luckily, my partner pointed it out to me, and I was shocked. I immediately unfollowed many accounts and started to fill my feed again with all the beautiful things that are going right with the world!
I feel so much better now, and focusing on this good content actually gives me more inspiration for the good that I can bring to the world.
There's more information out there than we could ever possibly consume, so it feels so healthy to curate a selection of information that brings us greater inspiration and personal wellbeing 💙
Thanks for sharing and asking such great questions! I will leave you with a spotify playlist I curated to uplift and inspire myself and my friends:
I collect perfume samples! There is something so exciting about exploring how a scent develops as you wear it. A tiny spritz will do. I love lots of little different options more than one massive bottle. And scent is so ephemeral.
I feel like I have started collecting so many things and fell off. This is a pretty inspiring post to help me get back into it!
Love to hear that ☺️

A beautiful and funny sentiment. I really enjoy this ✨
What a great post! Love the way you think 🙌🏽

Happy new week!
Now that is a variety hahaha! Metal was my go to in high school actually. Can’t go wrong 😌

My dream (which I’m sure is a common dream among people on this app) is to have my own little library at home.
Being surrounded by books is a very, very special feeling 📚

Ah, we have a lot in common my friend hahaha.
Giving a playlist as a gift is beautiful. My partner has done it once for me in the past, and it’s so thoughtful.
And I totally agree about the social media thing. Every time I realize I can unfollow someone, it feels like such a revelation LOL.
